There’s beer… and then there’s Craft Beer.

And, while some lesser informed individuals might shrug off such a seemingly insignificant distinction, anyone who enjoys and appreciates a fine brew will agree. However, do you know what makes Craft Beer a beverage in a class all its own?

Craft Beer is Beer with an Emphasis on the ‘Craft’Craft Beer is a local brew that focuses more on uniqueness than popularity

Before the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1919, which resulted in what was known as Prohibition, beer in America was almost solely brewed by local establishments and small, regional breweries. After the repeal of Prohibition, the brewing industry consolidated into a small number of large-scale breweries. And many of the large breweries that resumed the production of beer after Prohibition still retain their dominance of the market today. Yet, the “Big Beer” industry, if it could be called that, is dominated by just a handful of well-known brands:

  • Anheuser-Busch Inc Louis, MO
  • MolsonCoors Chicago, IL
  • Constellation Chicago, IL
  • Heineken USA White Plains, NY
  • Pabst Brewing Co Los Angeles, CA

However, the most exciting tectonic shift in the brewing industry over the last few decades has been the growth and rising popularity of craft beers. So, if “Big Beer” brews beer but not craft beer, then what’s the difference?

According to Brewer’s Association,

“An American craft brewer is a small and independent brewer.

Small: Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to a brewer according to rules of alternating proprietorships.

Independent: Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.”

Consequently, craft beer is the product of a craft brewery.

And here are a few distinguishing concepts related to craft breweries and craft beer:

  • The hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft brewers interpret historic styles with unique twists and develop new styles that have no precedent.
  • Craft beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley; interesting and sometimes non-traditional ingredients are often distinctively added.
  • Craft brewers maintain the integrity of what they brew and their general independence, free from a substantial interest by a non-craft brewer.

Oh, and the majority of Americans live within ten miles of a craft brewer. And this is especially true in California!
